 Letter writing 

Students are asked to write a letter or an application. Some letters are written to relatives and friends, while some are written to other persons or officers

Types of Letters

1. Informal letters: These letters are written to friends and relatives. These are mainly messages, invitation, suggestions, requests, thanks or the letters expressing sorrow on tragedies, illness, etc.

2. Formal letters: These are such letters which are written to administrative officers, eminent persons, business firms etc. These include complaint letters to editors, enquiry letters, applications, etc.

1. Heading: In this part, own address and the date are written. These both things are written on top left side. While writing address in letter, comma/full stop should not be used after the place of home. The name of city or village should be written in next line, Date should be written below the address

2. The Salutation: It is written below the date on left corner. The salutation is written according to the person to whom the letter is being written.

(a) For Relatives: My dear Father/Mother/Brother/Uncle, etc

(b) For a Friend: My dear Anil.

(c) For an officer or a businessman: Sir/Dear Sir/Madam, etc.

(d) For a firm: Dear sirs

3. The Body of the Letter: This is the main part of the letter. It begins with the next line below the salutation. All those things which the sender wants to say are written in this part.

4. The Subscription: it is written in the end below the last line of the main body of letter It begins with left corner.
(a) For Mother/Father/Your loving son/daughter: Yours affectionately/Affectionately yours

(b) For friend: Yours sincerely/Sincerely yours/Your loving friend

(c) For businessman/officer: Yours sincerely/Yours faithfully

5. The Signature: The letter-writer must sign below the subscription.

Format of an Informal Letter

An informal letter to a friend congratulating him on his success.

Students should try to write letters as per the instructions already described, and should not use comma (,), etc, unnecessarily. Some examples of letters are being given below, which are very important from the examination point of view. Students should carefully go through them and then, they should try to write letters on selves to perfect the skill.
